Shifting Shadows: A Mercy Thompson Novel by Patricia Briggs
Mercy Thompson’s world just got a whole lot bigger…
A collection of all-new and previously published short stories featuring Mercy Thompson, “one of the best heroines in the urban fantasy genre today” (Fiction Vixen Book Reviews), and the characters she calls friends…
I absolutely love compilation books, when you get all the little nuggets that explain the behind the scenes interactions and events that bring everything and everyone together. It’s never a bad thing to get more of the characters you love.
This collection brings the worlds of Mercy Thompson and the Marrok’s pack from Alpha & Omega together and throws in a little bit of Bran and Samuel’s past that clear up some of the vague references about them in the books. I so wanted to know what happened to Bran when he was made and I was completely satisfied.
A stand out short for me was Ben’s story. I love Ben. He has such a sketchy past when he comes to Adam’s pack, but he’s got this soft underbelly that just makes me want to cuddle and protect him. Come to find he’s not a saint, he’s made mistakes, but he doesn’t deserve to be painted with the deviant brush he was by the rest of the pack.
If you’ve read the last Mercy Thompson book, Storm Cursed, I’m sure you have some questions about how black witches moved into Adam and Mercy’s territory without them knowing. Warren’s private detective work for Kyle gives you some hints on how that might have happened.
And the last short that shows Mercy taking on another ghost just highlights how perfect Adam and Mercy are together. It’s not really connected to the rest of the Mercy Thompson world, but it brings back Coyote in a cameo with Adam, which is worth everything.
If you’re a fan of any of the characters in the Mercy Thompson or Alpha & Omega series this is a must read. This is the essential filler needed to round out the Marrok’s universe.
