A Ferry of Bones & Gold by Hailey Turner (Soulbound Book 1)
When the gods come calling, you don’t get to say no.
Patrick Collins is three years into a career as a special agent for the Supernatural Operations Agency when the gods come calling to collect a soul debt he owes them. An immortal has gone missing in New York City and bodies are showing up in the wake of demon-led ritual killings that Patrick recognizes all too easily from his nightmares.
Unable to walk away, Patrick finds himself once again facing off against mercenary magic users belonging to the Dominion Sect. Standing his ground alone has never been a winning option in Patrick’s experience, but it’s been years since he’s had a partner he could trust.
Looking for allies in all the wrong places, Patrick discovers the Dominion Sect’s next target is the same werewolf the Fates themselves have thrown into his path. Patrick has been inexplicably attracted to the man from their first meeting, but desire has no place in war. That doesn’t stop Patrick from wanting what he shouldn’t have. Jonothon de Vere is gorgeous, dangerous, and nothing but trouble—to the case, to the fight against every hell, and ultimately, to Patrick’s heart and soul.
In the end, all debts must be paid, and Patrick can only do what he does best—cheat death.
A Ferry of Bones & Gold is story filled with magic, immortals, witches, vampires and so many more cool creatures. Some are new to me like the Soultakers. Picture the character Venom. Super creepy, lots of sharp teeth, and extremely dangerous. Another is a Mage. A Mage is the highest ranking magic user and their powers can be defensive or offensive. Put all these characters in one book and what do you get? One amazingly, epic read.
Hailey created a world where mostof these creatures coexist and are monitored by varying military and/or government agencies. Our main character, Patrick Collins is a Mage. Patrick is on his way to Hawaii for a much needed vacation when he gets a call that he is needed in New York for an emergency. This is where all hell breaks loose. Literally.
Patrick’s ability to handle the worst of situations with ease and sarcasm is what drew me in. This man seems to be constantly put through the proverbial ringer yet comes out…well, let’s just say, he comes out of it. This guy is all go, no quit, balls out, which is not conducive to staying alive.
Hailey seriously threw me for a loop when she delivered the “who” is behind everything. I mean, I did not see that coming! Well done, lady.
While I am a huge Jono fan, I must say that I hope we get more of Nadine. This women is the female version of Patrick and I got a huge kick out of their relationship.
I must say after reading this book, I am NOT a fan of the gods. They all are seriously disturbed and it is a shame they are immortal.
A Ferry of Bones & Gold is a massive book with a huge cast of characters. Hailey’s ability to intertwine each character’s story without losing her reader, leaves me in awe. At times, I felt there were portions of the book that became overly descriptive, yet I was able to see the world Hailey created in my mind. It played like a movie and all that was missing was the popcorn and M&Ms.
If you loved Hailey’s Metahuman Files series, then you will be all over A Ferry of Bones & Gold.
