Blood & Bone (Blood & Bone #1) by C.C. Wood
Chloe MacArthur has finally found her mate but he's the one wolf she can't have.
To save her heart from further pain, she leaves the pack that she's come to consider her family. Unfortunately, unfinished business leads her back to her childhood home and straight into a deadly game with shifters that will do anything to prevent her from learning the truth.
Ian Lachlan is in mourning. Nearly two years ago, he lost his mate but, thanks to Chloe, he's finally living again. When he wanted to give up and die, she saved him.
Now, Chloe is the one who needs help and Lachlan plans to return the favor. Intent on protecting her from her enemies, he follows Chloe and soon discovers that he wants far more from her than friendship. He wants everything she has to give.
But can either of them let go of the past long enough to reach for their future?
I love CC's Bitten series and this is a spin off. This is a great book for anyone who loves the vampire and werewolf genres. There’s some background from the Bitten series that’s referenced but you won’t feel like you’re missing anything if you haven’t read them. You should, because they’re awesome, but you don’t need to.
Chloe was a strong character. She’s recently realized that she’s done everything she can to bring Lachlan back from the brink following his mate into death and now it’s time to move on. There’s only so much time you can sink into a relationship that isn’t going to go anywhere. See she realized a while ago that Lachlan is her mate, but she’s also well aware that he’s decided to never go there again. She’s got other shit to do and it’s way past time to put off doing it trying to rehabilitate Lachlan.
Lachlan is struggling. He’s coasted for the past two years and only really wakes up to what’s going on around him when Chloe leaves compound. He is the epitome of clueless where Chloe is concerned. Of course he goes after her to find out why she left. Their relationship is hot, I won’t deny that. But I still feel that Lachlan’s waxing over his deceased mate and his profession of feelings for Chloe cheated her a little bit. I think she deserved a little more.
Outside of their relationship, there’s still a ton of stuff going on around them. There are unsolved murders, nefarious plots and surprise allies. All of it combines into a really entertaining beginning to a new series and I can’t wait to get to the next book.
