Hooked by Brenda Rothert

From the author of the On the Line and Fire on Ice hockey romance series comes a sultry novel featuring a brooding NHL player who’s hell on skates—and the no-nonsense woman who forces him to clean up his act.
Miranda: Even though I’m broke, putting myself through college, and working two jobs, I’m trying to make the best of it. Meanwhile, Jake Birch, hockey’s hottest bad boy, lives in a luxury hotel in downtown Chicago—and still complains about every little thing in his penthouse. But after I tell him off, instead of getting me fired, Jake requests me as his personal housekeeper. Then he starts flirting with me. Only I’m not flirting back . . . at least, I’m trying not to. Did I mention that he’s hockey’s hottest bad boy?
Jake: I’ve met the best woman at the worst possible time. Miranda is the fire to my ice—a sexy, charmingly candid spark who breaks down my walls and reminds me what it’s like to feel again. But I’m being forced to date my team owner’s daughter to keep my job, so I can’t be caught with Miranda. Still, we’re getting closer—until Miranda finds out about my “girlfriend.” And that’s not the only secret I’ve been keeping. But Miranda’s the one I want . . . even if she doesn’t believe me.

Miranda is struggling to make ends meet. She is going to school so that she can get her college degree and she also works two jobs, one at a hotel and the other at a bar. She lives paycheck to paycheck and pretty much lives on ramen noodles. When her boss Tony assigns her to clean the suites, one of them being occupied by NHL’s playboy, Jake Birch. The last thing she expected was for him to make her his personal housekeeper, even after she tells him off and calls him on his shit.

Jake is one of hockey’s best players both on and off the ice. Relationships are complicated so he doesn’t do them. When he meets the smart, beautiful and feisty Miranda, he has never wanted anything more and for the first time in his life, he is finding he wants more with her. The problem is, she refuses to give him the time of day.

Jake does all he can to win Miranda over, even if he has to be her friend. Miranda knows all too well how men like Jake are, you know the “no commitments”, the wham bam thank you mam kind of guy. She refuses to get her heart stomped on again, after her last relationship, her trust in men is non-existent.

Slowly, Jake breaks down her walls. Their friendship comes easy and the more and more they hang out together, the more their relationship blossoms. Miranda can see that Jake hasn’t completely opened up to her. Both with extremely busy schedules, they both worked hard to make time with each other. When they were able to see each other, they made the most of it and I don’t mean in a sexual way. It was nice to see that their relationship didn’t start off with sex and the build up to that moment was so worth the wait.

I adored Miranda and her fire. She does not take shit from anyone, including her boss. She is determined, focused but also vulnerable. I adored her strength and determination and how down to earth she is. She has been nothing but forthcoming and honest and unfortunately the secrets he keeps come back to bite him in the ass and Miranda finds herself heartbroken once again.

Jake cracked me up. I also love seeing the hot guy struggle his way through unchartered territory and learning to deal with the feelings that scare the crap out of him. Miranda doesn’t put up with his crap and I love that it keeps him grounded.  I also loved how vulnerable Jake was with Miranda. It was nice to see her be strong for him.

The emotions were perfect in this story. The excitement, the nervousness, the uncertainty, the hurt, the heartache but most of all the foundation they laid for each other.

I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. A must read!
